Outfielder Cespedes was traded to the Mets from the Detroit Tigers in July last year and helped the franchise to the World Series, which they lost 4-1 to the Kansas City Royals.

He finished 2015 with 35 home runs and was third in Major League Baseball for extra-base hits with 83.

Cespedes became a free agent after the 2015 season but has come back to the Mets in a deal announced on Tuesday and reported to be worth $75million.

"I loved my experience with the Mets last season," Cespedes said. "In a short period of time, my team-mates and the fans made New York feel like home, and I truly felt embraced by the entire organisation.

"As I entered free agency, I couldn't deny the pull to come back and finish what we had started last year.

"I am excited to finally announce that next season I am coming back to join the New York Mets once again."
