The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hanna Tetteh has indicated that she now plans to sign the petition for the release of the Montie trio.

A tweet from her on Tuesday morning states: "Just so that my position no longer in doubt & its clear that I'm of the view that the sentence was harsh I'll be signing the petition today."

However, less than 12 hours before, on Viasat One TV, she argued that even though she believes the sentence handed the three was harsh, that will not force her to support calls for their release.

She said she did not sign the petition because “I don’t think it is for me to do that.”

In announcing her intention to sign the petition, she joins a number of government appointees and members of the governing NDC signed a petition pleading with President Mahama to exercise his power under Article 72 of the constitution. This Article gives him the power to exercise the prerogative of mercy.
