World Championship bronze medallist Adriano Malori has been moved to a specialist facility in Buenos Aires following a high-speed crash on Friday.

Malori - part of the Movistar team that achieved a podium place in Richmond - was taken to hospital and placed in an induced coma after suffering a head trauma during the Tour de San Luis in Argentina.

The Italian was near the front of the peloton when he lost his balance on stage five, somersaulting over his handlebars and causing a pile-up.

Movistar confirmed Malori - who was also second in the men's time trial last September - was placed in intensive care to aid his recovery, rather than as a direct result of the trauma.

After his condition stabilised in San Luis, the 27-year-old has been moved to the Argentine capital to continue his rehabilitation.

A Movistar statement read: "Adriano Malori was moved on Monday to a specialist clinic in Buenos Aires clinic so they can conduct more accurate medical examinations that are not available with the techniques and instruments in the San Luis clinic where he was admitted after his accident.

"This protocol is normal with this type of injury as a result of head trauma.

"He is accompanied at all times the team doctor, Jesus Hoyos, who coordinates with the medical services of the hospital."

Malori was part of Movistar's Tour de France squad in 2015 that helped put Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde on the podium, and claimed the team title.
