Muguruza lost 6-4 6-4 to Williams in her only previous major final - at Wimbledon last year - but gained revenge with a 7-5 6-4 win on the clay of Roland Garros.

The Spaniard squandered four match points at 5-3 up in the second set but held serve in the next game to see out the victory.
