Pakistan's batting coach Grant Flower criticised his side's lack of composure as they allowed New Zealand to tally up runs late in their innings during Monday's one-day international.

The tourists bowled well early on in Wellington to have the Black Caps struggling on 99-6 in the 23rd over, but their discipline faltered as Henry Nicholls led the charge.

Nicholls was ably supported by Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry and Mitchell McClenaghan as the hosts regularly found the boundary, finishing their knock on 280-8 – 71 coming off the final five overs.

In response Pakistan were bowled out for 210, despite being well set on 142-3 in the 33rd over.

Flower was disappointed with Pakistan's efforts with the bat, but suggested their slip in concentration with the ball was the reason for defeat in the opening ODI.

"We didn't use our brains at all towards the end," he said. "Bowling yorkers is skill execution and we didn't do that. They played well at the end.

"The short ball worked to a certain extent, but we overdid it, and we didn't learn and we just didn't bowl enough yorkers.

"If we're going to be honest we should have got them out for 200-odd, seeing the start we had.

"Even though we should have got them out for a lot less, I still backed the guys to get the target. We lacked a bit of intent at the start and then we had quite a few soft wickets.

"We didn't take advantage of a good batting track."
