The ban was imposed as part of the preparations for the annual Fetu Afahye festival, which is expected to take place from 27th August to 4th September.

The lifting of the ban comes just two days before the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s scheduled campaign launch at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Earlier the Progressive Progressive People’s Party raised concerns over the decision by the ruling National Democratic Congress to launch its campaign in Cape Coast.

The Cape Coast North and South Parliamentary Candidates of the PPP, Sarah Ewuraesi Bucknor and Bright Edem Drofenu accused the Oguaa Traditional Council of discriminating as the party’s (PPP) earlier attempt to organise a similar campaign was disallowed.

Party leaders in the area are therefore demanding answers from the Traditional Council on the matter.

But the lifting of the ban on Friday will then mean the NDC can hold the launch of its campaign as scheduled.

In a statement signed by the chairman of the 2016 Afahye Planning Committee, Nana Kow Amoasi III, he said the decision to lift the ban was taken by the “President, Omanhen of the Oguaa Traditional Council, Nanano, Supifo, Akomfo and other stakeholders.” The statement added that the ban on funerals remains in place.

NDC not capitalising on death of Prof Mills

Director of Communications for the NDC’s 2016 Campaign, Joyce Bawa Mogtari earlier defended the party’s decision to organise the campaign launch in Cape Coast. She explained that late President John Mills was one of the reasons they were launching the campaign in the region.

“I’m sure his Excellency the late President [John Evans Atta Mills] himself, will be proud to hear that we are indeed going back to the Central Region, his home region, where he hails from to hold this all important official launch,” she said.

She, however, denied claims that the party was capitalising on the death of the late President for political gains.

“You know really well that there is really no such exploitation. Don’t forget that we will be doing several activities in several other parts of the country. We are a social democratic party, we like to do things from any part of Ghana and we are not even barred from holding any such activity in any part of this country. So I don’t think that there is anything to do in terms of exploitation. We just believe that this time round, strategically, for us the plan is to officially launch in the Central Region and several other activities will be taking place as we go along,” she added
