Olam Agri, a leading food, feed, and fibre agribusiness in Ghana, has taken its flagship health initiative to the Greater Accra Region as part of its ongoing nationwide screening project aimed at promoting the health and well-being of bakers in Ghana.
The campaign, initiated in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), involves general medical checks, health education, and breast cancer screening to promote the welfare of bakers and protect the public against foodborne diseases.
Launched in 2022, the Healthy Baker initiative has successfully conducted over 15 health screening drives, and more than 5,000 bakers have benefited from this initiative across various regions and cities, including Tema, Ashaiman, Accra, and Kumasi.
This year, Olam Agri aimed to screen over 7000 bakers across major regions in Ghana. This phase of the campaign, which began in the Western Region and subsequently in the Central Region, screened over 3000 bakers in February and March, respectively. In the Greater Accra Region, more than 2500 bakers are expected to benefit from this campaign.
The “My Healthy Baker” campaign is a key component of Olam Agri’s broader initiative to support bakers in Ghana through education while monitoring their health status and compliance with protocols. This year’s initiative continues to monitor vital health conditions, such as blood pressure and hepatitis B, while in recent campaigns, breast cancer screening has been introduced as part of the comprehensive health assessment.
Speaking to newsmen, Mr. Soumya Saxena, Head of Olam Agri’s Grains Business, highlighted the company’s commitment to improving the health status of bakers and enhancing food safety among consumers.
“At Olam Agri, we continue to ensure a healthier baking community. With sustained health screening and education, we aim to instil the culture of food safety among our bakers for a stronger food system. The feedback so far has been overwhelming, and we are excited to extend this opportunity to bakers in the Greater Accra Region.” Soumya Saxena said.
Olam Agri continues to invest in the communities it serves, ensuring that small and medium-scale food producers like bakers can access support to enable them to thrive economically and personally. The company continues to invest in promoting health and wellness through various initiatives, including the Grains Hygiene Standard Management (GHSM) program, which aims to standardise safety protocols for bakers nationwide.
