Thierry Neuville was in front after the opening super special stage on Thursday, but Tanak is the man to catch in his Ford Fiesta RS 24.

The Estonian was in front in this World Rally Car round last year and again showed his liking for the super-fast sandy roads by securing five victories on the day.

Tanak holds an advantage of 4.2 seconds over Andreas Mikkelsen (Volkswagen Polo R), while Hayden Paddon is six seconds adrift of the leader following a day which comprised of 10 speed tests covering 121.92 kilometres.

"It's been a great day, especially this afternoon when I found a great rhythm," said Tanak.

"The stages have been so fast, and some were quite rough, but the 'button' was in. If you want to win there is no other way."

Championship leader Sebastien Ogier is back in fourth, 16.3s adrift of Tanak, while Neuville dropped back to fifth.
