Peter Uihlein leads Perth International

Peter Uilhlein continued to show signs of recovery from a recent wrist injury as a superb seven-under-par 65 saw him take a one-shot lead after round one of the Perth International.

The American missed two cuts on the European Tour's Desert Swing and withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic this month because of his injury.

However, Uilhlein recorded a top-10 finish in Malaysia last week and was in top form amid windy conditions at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club on Monday.

Uilhlein's round started poorly with a bogey at the first, but birdies at the third, fourth and seventh helped him recover before he holed his approach at the par-four ninth for an eagle two.

A birdie at the par-five 11th followed, while an 18-foot putt at the 14th saw him move to six under and a further gain at the 17th rounded off a fine outing.

"I had a 25-footer for par on the second and hooped it and then holed a nice birdie on three and kind of relaxed a little bit after that," Uihlein told the European Tour's official website.

"The wind switched pretty dramatically and it felt like the real stretch home was down-wind and I felt like we could get some birdies after that so it helped a little bit."

Romain Wattel and Shiv Kapur are in a two-way tie for second on six under.

Frenchman Wattel reached the turn on 33 after hitting five birdies and two bogeys, before three gains on an unblemished back nine left him well in contention.

Kapur, who started on the back nine, did not have a single dropped shot on his card as he signed for a 66.

Rhein Gibson is a stroke further back in fourth, while fellow Australians Brett Rumford and Scott Arnold are among a cluster of eight players tied for fifth.
