Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis progress in darts world champs

The 16-time world champion completed a 4-1 win despite an inconsistent performance to set up a last-16 meeting with either Mervyn King or Jelle Klaasen.

Taylor lost the first set and, despite his struggles with scoring and on the doubles, he advanced with a 92.91 average.

Two-time winner Adrian Lewis produced another clinical display to beat Andrew Gilding in the first game of the evening session.

World number five Lewis eased to a straight-sets victory over Jan Dekker in the first round and also made light work of seeing off Gilding 4-0, chalking up eight 180s and losing only two legs in a one-sided encounter.

Peter Wright produced an ominous performance to also go through to the last 16 with a straight-sets triumph over Ronny Huybrechts.

World number four Wright hit a 180 in the opening leg and never looked back, reeling off eight legs in a row to progress at a canter.

Mark Webster had earlier ruthlessly ended Terry Jenkins' participation by coasting to a 4-0 victory over the 2011 semi-finalist.

Jenkins took just for legs off the impressive Webster, who will now face Alexandra Palace debutant Alan Norris after he got the better of Joe Murnan 4-1.

Mensur Suljovic came out on top in a thriller against David Pallett, with both players missing doubles for a nine-dart finish before the Austrian hit the bull to seal a tense 4-3 victory.
