10 facts about Liberia's president-elect

Liberians have elected former World Best Footballer, George Weah as its 25th President. The President-elect has had a memorable football career before moving into politics.

We look at some of these landmark memories.

1. In 1995, George Weah became the only African footballer to have won the Balon D’or

2. In 1996, he was named African Player of the Century.

3. Weah was banned from six European matches for breaking the nose of the Portuguese defender Jorge Costa on 20 November 1996.

4. He retired from active football in 2003, at age 37.

5. George Weah represented his country in the two AFCONs; 1996 and 2002.

6. He served as a UN Goodwill Ambassador and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador during his playing days.

7. George Weah launched a CD called Lively Up Africa in 1998. He featured the singer Frisbie Omo Isibor and eight other African football stars. The proceeds from this CD went to children's programmes in the countries of origin of the athletes involved.

8. Timothy Weah, son of the elected president, plays for Paris Saint-Germain in France and represents United States at youth level

9. Mr. Weah has three children: George Weah Jr, Tita and Timothy.

10. George Weah converted from Protestant Christianity to Islam, before converting back.

11. He ran for the presidency in 2005 but lost to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

12. In 2014, he ran for election to the Senate as a Congress for Democratic Change candidate in Montserrado County becoming the first athlete to be elected to the the legislature.
