Reports emerged this week claiming McGregor, who was removed from the UFC 200 card after a disagreement over his promotional duties, is on the verge of agreeing a lucrative bout with retired former five-division world champion Mayweather.

The UFC featherweight champion has fuelled speculation by posting a picture altered to show himself looking Mayweather in the eyes along with the phrase: "MMA Vs Boxing."

Furthermore, on Friday, McGregor's coach John Kavanagh uploaded a photograph of a sunny day, adding the playful caption: "It's really fine Mayweather we're having here."

McGregor and Mayweather have famously exchanged barbs in the past, which has only increased talk of a clash down the line.

However, UFC president Dana White seemingly poured cold water on any potential fight between the two when he said this week: "It's not true; it's just a tabloid story. As far as I knew, Floyd is retired and he's been on a world-wide vacation and hasn't even been thinking of fighting."

McGregor also has previous for posting cryptic social media messages, with a hint at retirement and suggestions that he was back on the UFC 200 bill both proving to be untrue.
