Rangers sign former All-Star Carlos Gomez
The veteran MLB free agent has signed with the American League West-leading Rangers, who confirmed the deal on Saturday.
Gomez is not the All-Star of old, as the 30-year-old was batting just .210/.272/.322 this season with 100 strikeouts before being released by the Astros.
"Sometimes guys change scenery, cultures, roles or clubs and play a lot better," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "The playing ability is there. We are intrigued by his talent."
The Rangers need a veteran outfielder after losing Shin-Soo Choo (wrist, forearm) for the season and will likely platoon Gomez with Nomar Mazara.
Gomez is a .284/.368/.448 career hitter in Arlington, so the change of scenery may benefit both sides. He will start in the minors with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday before joining the Rangers Thursday for the start of their 10-game homestand.
The 2013 Gold Glove Award winner had been linked to the Miami Marlins, San Francisco Giants, St Louis Cardinals and New York Mets since being cut earlier in August.
