Joel Quenneville moved into second place on the all-time NHL coaching wins list as he led the Chicago Blackhawks to a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Quenneville - who recently signed a three-year extension with Chicago - now has 783 NHL regular-season wins to his name as a coach.

He had goaltender Corey Crawford to thank for the win on Thursday, as he made 40 saves to ensure Jonathan Toews and Ryan Garbutt's first-period goals were enough to seal the victory.

The Winnipeg Jets scored a thrilling 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators in overtime, with Blake Wheeler netting the clincher just 51 seconds after the final restart.

Dustin Byfuglien struck twice for the Jets.

The Washington Capitals continued their good form with a 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks as Evgeny Kuznetsov scored two and assisted another.

The Colorado Avalanche completed a shutout against the New Jersey Devils to win 3-0, while the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the St Louis Blues 4-1.

The New York Islanders won their local contest against the New York Rangers 3-1 and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 courtesy of a Danny DeKeyser goal in overtime.

In the late game, the San Jose Sharks hosted the Edmonton Oilers and won 2-1 in a shoot-out.
