England started the second day at Newlands 317-5, but Stokes charged to an impressive 204 not out, reaching his double-century off just 163 deliveries to give his side complete control and etch his name into the history books.

Only New Zealand's Nathan Astle has scored a double-hundred off fewer balls.

Stokes' partnership with Jonny Bairstow (95 not out) looked to be in danger of falling away late on Saturday but the pair hit 45 runs off the first four overs in an explosive start to the second day at Newlands, heading into lunch with the country's highest Test partnership for the sixth wicket.

Stokes completed his century off 105 balls before surging to his double-hundred in the next 58, helping accumulate 196 runs in 25 overs alongside Bairstow during the session - taking their stand to 290 off 270 balls.
