Philadelphia were trailing 3-0 midway through the second period after Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson added to Robby Fabbri and Vladimir Tasarenko's goal in the opening stanza.

But a shorthand goal from Chris Vandevelde put the Flyers back into the game with Wayne Simmonds pulling another goal back less than a minute later.

Simmonds restored parity 51 seconds into the third period before Evgeny Medvedev scored the winning goal with just over three minutes remaining.

The Montreal Canadiens suffered a fourth successive defeat after going down 5-1 to the Nashville Predators.

Montreal were the in-form side at the start of the NHL season but their run of defeats sees them in danger of being knocked off top spot in the Atlantic division.

Shea Weber finished the game with a goal and two assists as the Panthers ran riot.

The Colorado Avalanche's run of five consecutive wins came to an end after a 7-4 loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Scores were locked at 3-3 by the end of the second period, but four unanswered third-period goals from the Maple Leafs secured victory for the Canadian side.

In other results, the New York Islanders picked up a 5-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks, while the Washington Capitals edged the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1.

Doubles from Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel saw the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2, Teddy Purcell helped the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets, and Vernon Fiddler also contributed with a double as his Dallas Stars overcame the Minnesota Wild 6-3.
