Rio 2016: CAS dismisses Aurelie Muller appeal

Aurelie Muller has failed in her attempt to have her disqualification from the women's Olympic 10 kilometre open swim overruled.

Muller finished second behind Sharon van Rouwendaal in the gruelling eight lap race off Copacabana beach on Monday, however she was quickly stripped of the silver medal.

The Frenchwoman was punished for dunking Rachele Bruni as they reached for the board swimmers must touch to finish their race, the Italian duly promoted in Muller's place with Poliana Okimoto taking bronze.

An appeal from Muller was lodged with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but on Friday they dismissed the 26-year-old's claim.

A CAS statement read: "It [the CAS panel] has considered that the dispute was related to a 'field-of-play decision' which, according to long standing CAS jurisprudence, is unable to be reviewed by CAS except in the event that there has been arbitrariness or bad faith in arriving at such decision, which was not proven in the present case."
