Rio 2016: Cavendish rubbishes Wiggins rift rumours

Mark Cavendish has rubbished media reports that he fell out with Bradley Wiggins during Rio 2016 over the make-up of Great Britain's team pursuit squad.

Cavendish was not selected for the four-man event in the velodrome and had to watch as Wiggins, Owain Doull, Ed Clancy and Steven Burke took gold in a new world record time.

Some reports suggested the decision to leave Cavendish out had seen the two experienced riders fall out, with the 31-year-old reportedly suggesting Wiggins "wanted to be the hero".

However, the Manxman - who won his first Olympic medal as he took silver in the omnium - was quick to deny those claims on his return to the UK.

"It really is rubbish, and I can't even joke about it now," he told talkSPORT.

"We're fine! We're brothers - we bicker all the time, you know? But obviously the Olympics aren't all the time, so people aren't usually that bothered.

"But we're fine. He's one of my best friends in the world.

"I didn't know the TV cameras were on me the other day - it must have been a slow news day because the press just did all this click-baiting stuff."
