Joe Ingles was furious with Australia's performance in the men's basketball on Friday after they crashed out of the semi-finals in Rio following a heavy loss to Serbia.

Australia were on the back foot from the opening minutes of the contest and never recovered, eventually losing 87-61 in an incredibly poor performance.

The Boomers had defeated Serbia 95-80 in the group stages and were favourites to advance to the final against the United States.

But it all fell apart against a determined Serbia, who have already sent out an ominous warning to two-time defending gold medallists USA.

"It was pathetic. Nothing Australian about it," Ingles said post-game in regards to Australia's effort.

However, Australia still have one game left to play at Rio 2016, coming up against Spain in the bronze medal match on Sunday.

Asked if Australia can recover for it, Ingles said: "No doubt. That's one of the greatest things about being Australian is that we never give up."

Ingles' team-mate Patty Mills added: "It was a shame the way we came out at the beginning and we couldn't recover from that.

"We have one more go and it's still a great opportunity for us."

Meanwhile, Andrew Bogut admitted "they [Serbia] kicked our ass from start to finish."
