Rio 2016: Kaori Icho makes Olympic history

After becoming the first woman to win individual gold at four consecutive Olympics, Kaori Icho paid tribute to her late mother.

Japanese wrestler Icho triumphed in the women's 58 kilogramme division on Wednesday, adding to the three 63kg titles she had won in Athens, Beijing and London.

The 32-year-old now resides in the prestigious company of Olympic greats like Carl Lewis and Michael Phelps, who topped the podium in individual events at four successive Games.

After coming from behind to beat Valeriia Koblova 3-1 at Carioca Arena 2, Icho held a picture of her mother, who passed away last year.

"I really miss her. I know that she is looking down from heaven on me. I feel her. The last two points [of the match], she gave me," said Icho.

"I have [wrestled] for so many years. I have to thank all those who supported me; my family, my friends, all [those] surrounding me."

Icho also become the first athlete to win four gold medals in wrestling.
