Netherlands won gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and now have a chance of a third successive triumph.

Lisa Schutze put Germany ahead in the first quarter but Maartje Paumen equalised early in the second, with nothing to separate the two sides by the final whistle.

With the shoot-out level at 3-3 Marie Mavers was denied by Netherlands goalkeeper Joyce Sombroek, and Ellen Hoog took advantage to send the reigning champions through.

Great Britain await the Dutch in Friday's final following their 3-0 victory over New Zealand.

Alex Danson pounced to stroke home from a penalty corner in the second period, with Helen Richardson-Walsh making it 2-0 via a penalty stroke after being impeded in the area by Kayla Whitelock.

Danson scored her second of the night from the spot in the 52nd minute, ensuring Britain will improve upon their bronze at London 2012.
