Maria Verchenova revealed she had gone nine years without holing an ace before she did so as part of her record-breaking round on the final day of the Olympic women's golf tournament.

The Russian carded a course-best 62 in Rio to surge up the leaderboard, though her final score of four under left the 30-year-old well short of the medal spots.

The highlight of her scorecard was the hole in one she achieved at the fourth and she could scarcely believe she had done it.

Verchenova explained: "I didn't see it go in. It was a little six iron downhill. I couldn't understand if it was in or not and then people started clapping and I was like 'Oh my god, I got a hole-in-one'.

"It's amazing because the last one was when I was 21."

Commenting on her low score, she added: "It's amazing. It is a course that really suits me. I knew that from the first day, it was just tough, the wind was funny.

"Today was one of those days when I could hole putts and shoot really, really low.

"It was supposed to be really windy, but it never really picked up."
