Rory McIlroy and Jason Day look to US PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy and Jason Day have shared three of the last four US PGA Championship titles and both are in confident mood ahead of the 2016 tournament.

Though neither was able to contend for The Open at Royal Troon, they struck similarly positive notes in looking ahead to the next major at Baltusrol this month.

McIlroy, who won the fourth major in golf's calendar in 2012 and 2014, said he was content with his game after a final-round 67 left him tied for fifth in Scotland.

"I can only be positive going into Baltusrol, really. I'm playing well," he said.

"I'm driving the ball great. I think that's a big thing, especially with the PGA coming up. The PGAs are usually if you can drive the ball well, you'll do well, and I've had success in that tournament before, so I'm really happy with that.

"I want to win. I want to play well. I'm happy with everything. I'm happy with where my game's at. All I can do is keep plugging away. I feel like it's definitely heading in the right direction."

World number one Day, whose maiden major triumph came last year at Whistling Straits, conceded he had some work to do to prepare for his title defence, but felt in a good shape.

"Obviously I need to improve the short game. I think the short game let me down this week," he said after finishing in a tie for 22nd.

"I didn't hole the putts that I needed to out there and obviously when I put myself in opportunity situations with regards to driving greens and getting around the greens, I didn't get up and down for birdies.

"But obviously the PGA is the first time I've ever defended a major championship, so I'll try and soak up the experience of what that entails with regards to the start of the week going to the champion dinner and having to defend that and go to the media and the press room and all that stuff.

"But once Thursday comes around, you have to go out there and execute and play good."
