Salford Red Devils charged with salary cap breach

Salford Red Devils face the threat of being docked up to 20 points after the club was charged with a breach of the Super League salary cap.

Outspoken Salford owner Marwan Koukash vowed to clear the Red Devils' name earlier this year following allegations of salary-cap irregularities in the last two years.

But the Rugby Football League (RFL) on Friday revealed Salford have been charged and must now wait to discover the extent of their punishment.

A statement from the governing body said: "The RFL has issued charges in relation to alleged breaches of the RFL Operational Rules and Salary Cap Regulations concerning contractual arrangements made with Salford players in 2014 and 2015.

"The charges will be considered by an independent Off Field Operational Rules Tribunal, at a date to be confirmed."

RFL regulations state that where a tribunal determines a salary-cap offence has been committed, a club could be hit with a penalty of up to 20 points.

Yet Koukash appeared less than concerned as he subsequently tweeted: "I do not know what all this fuss is about. Calm down !!!"

Salford are sixth in the Super League table after winning two of their first five games.
