Russia has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the country's ban from the Paralympics.

The International Paralympic Committee imposed the blanket suspension earlier this month, following allegations of state-sponsored doping made in an independent report commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

That stance differed to that of the International Olympic Committee, which left it to sports' individual federations to determine whether competitors could take part at the Olympic Games.

And on Monday, the Russian Paralympic Committee confirmed they had appealed to CAS to overturn the decision.

"Chairman of the board, first vice-president of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RCC) Pavel Rozhkov said that the RCC on August 15 sent a statement of appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne (Switzerland)," read a statement.

"The meeting is scheduled for August 21, 2016 in the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The CAS decision will be announced before midnight on 22 August 2016."

The Paralympics are due to begin on September 7.
