Saints come on strong to see off Tigers

An improved performance from Castleford Tigers proved in vain as St Helens produced a late fightback to triumph 30-20 at The Jungle on Sunday.

Daryl Powell's Tigers were thrashed 58-16 by Hull KR on home soil last weekend, but were far more competitive as they led for the majority of their meeting with Saints, who are now two points adrift of the top four.

Joel Monaghan and Denny Solomona crossed in the first half, either side of a Joe Greenwood try, to put Castleford 10-6 ahead at the interval.

Although a converted Shannon McDonnell touchdown sneaked Saints in front for the first time early in the second half, a home win appeared likely when Mike McMeeken and Jy Hitchcox went over in quick succession for the Tigers.

However, Kyle Amor's try got St Helens back within a score on the hour mark and Greenwood then claimed his second.

The visitors' comeback was crowned when Jonny Lomax - the scorer of two tries against Leeds Rhinos last time out on his return from a lengthy injury lay-off - rounded off a fine move, Luke Walsh maintaining his perfect conversion record with the subsequent two-pointer.
