Sanitopia CIC to commission new sanitation facility for Ghana Library Authority
Sanitopia CIC is set to commission and officially hand over a newly completed sanitation facility to the Ghana Library Authority as part of efforts to improve hygiene infrastructure within public institutions. The ceremony is scheduled for May 20, 2026, at 11:00 am at the George Padmore Research Library on African Affairs. The project, fully financed and delivered by Sanitopia CIC, marks the beginning of a long-term commitment by the organisation to support enhanced sanitation systems across Ghana’s public library network.
According to the organisation, the newly constructed facility represents the first phase of an ambitious plan to deliver 150 sanitation facilities for the Ghana Library Authority over the next five years.Founder and Chairman of Sanitopia CIC, Richard Acheampong, is expected to lead the commissioning ceremony, which will bring together stakeholders from the sanitation, education, and public health sectors.
Sanitopia CIC says the initiative is aimed at promoting public health, preserving dignity, and ensuring access to safe and sustainable sanitation services, particularly within learning environments. The organisation emphasised that improved sanitation infrastructure in libraries is critical, as these spaces serve as important hubs for education, research, and community engagement. The commissioning is expected to signal a broader nationwide effort to modernise sanitation facilities in public institutions, while reinforcing partnerships that prioritise health and wellbeing.
Last year, Sanitopia CIC and the Ghana Library Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to construct 150 modern sanitation facilities across libraries nationwide, while also undertaking renovation works in selected locations.Speaking at the signing ceremony, Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr Ziblim Alhassan Betintiche, said the Authority remains committed to ensuring access to information, literacy, and conducive learning environments for all Ghanaians.
He noted that the Authority has over the years, expanded its reach through infrastructure improvements, technology integration, and community engagement initiatives.“In addition to our 139 public libraries across the country, the Ghana Library App — a zero-rated platform supported by Telecel and MTN — allows users to access books and learning resources without data charges,” he said.Mr. Betintiche added that, in line with the government’s 24-hour economy policy, the Authority has introduced extended operating hours at the National Children’s Library and mobile library services to improve access to educational support.
He expressed appreciation to Sanitopia CIC for the partnership, noting that its commitment to sanitation and public well-being aligns with the Authority’s vision of building libraries that support learning and community development.Speaking on behalf of Sanitopia CIC, Mr Acheampong said the organisation aims to construct 2,000 toilets across Ghana within five years, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He explained that the initiative will be driven by three core pillars: community-centred sanitation facilities, waste-to-value innovation, and capacity building through partnerships.
“This initiative is not merely about infrastructure — it is about health, dignity, and education. It is about giving our children a safe and clean environment to learn and thrive,” he said.According to him, the 150 sanitation facilities will go beyond physical structures, serving as symbols of progress, respect, and Ghana’s commitment to sustainable development. He further called on government, corporate organisations, development partners, and philanthropists to support the vision of expanding access to safe sanitation across the country.
