Pupils of La Bawaleshie mark ‘My First Day at School’
The La Bawaleshie Presby cluster of schools have celebrated “My First Day at school today. The concept of ‘My First Day at School’, which was initiated six years ago by the Ministry of Education, is observed on the first day of the new academic year of basic schools to whip up enthusiasm among the pupils and encourage them to stay at school.
On a visit to the La Bawaleshie Presby cluster of schools, new entrants for the new academic calendar has rather been poor. Circuit Supervisor of Abelenkpe Circuit in charge of La Bawaleshie School, Catherine Sarpong told Pulse.com.gh that new entrants have not been encouraging as compared to last year.
“Last year, my first day at school, they were many than today. So far, where I have been, we have gotten about 20, even though we were expecting about 45.. We hope by tomorrow we get the numbers. Because this is the first day, I can’t be very sure. Normally, it takes about one week for us to settle down before we will know. I hope by 12pm, we get a sizeable number,” she said.
Meanwhile, the headmistress of the La Bawaleshie A and B, Theresa Amerley Annan said the challenges normally encountered on the first day at school is that lessons are sometimes put on hold because parents refuse to buy forms for new wards before reopening day. she stated that parents later crowd up in her office on reopening day to do so.
Some parents, who have brought in new pupils to be admitted have expressed delight at the arrangement procedures being put in place for their wards.
“Well, I brought my 4-year-old son to KG 2 today, and I’m happy about the way the school welcomed him. The fees is 140 cedis. And I think it is okay because they will give my son a school uniform, textbooks, pencils. So I am okay”, one of the parents said.
However, as at the time of filing this report, the materials and other stationery needed for the La Bawaleshie cluster of schools to celebrate “My First Day at school” is yet to arrive from the Metro Unit.
