Maitland missed the 27-23 defeat against Wales last time out with a thigh injury and the wing has failed to recover in time for Saturday's trip to Rome.

Flanker Cowan was concussed during the match at the Principality Stadium and has been ruled out, although backs Visser (hamstring) and Horne (foot) are available after resuming full training.

Alex Allan, Chris Fusaro and Pat MacArthur are all out, meaning there are call-ups to the training squad for Grayson Hart, Rob Harley, Ryan Wilson, George Turner and Hamish Watson.

Saturday's game sees the bottom two sides meet, having each lost both of their opening matches.
