Senators fire coach Dave Cameron

The Ottawa Senators' new hockey operations chief was quick to make his first major decision, dismissing head coach Dave Cameron.

Just two days after long-time general manager Bryan Murray revealed he is stepping down into a senior advisory role, newly promoted general manager Pierre Dorion announced Cameron's departure, along with assistant coaches Andre Tourigny and Rick Wamsley.

Additionally, assistant coach Jason Smith will not return to the bench, although he has been offered another position within the franchise.

Last year, Cameron helped guide Ottawa to a dramatic late-season turnaround that resulted in a wild-card play-off berth after going 32-15-8 in 55 games.

He fell short this season, however, missing the play-offs and finishing fifth in the Atlantic Division with a 38-35-9 record.

Cameron, 57, became Ottawa's 11th head coach in December 2014 when he replaced Paul MacLean.

Prior to his promotion, he spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with the Senators.
