Shiffrin wins Jasna slalom, Hansdotter takes title

Mikaela Shiffrin was in a class of her as she won the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup race in Jasna by over two seconds on a day when she relinquished her slalom title to Frida Hansdotter.

The Olympic and world slalom champion claimed victory in Crans-Montana on her return from injury last month and blew her rivals away in the penultimate slalom race of the season in Slovakia on Sunday.

Saturday's giant slalom was cancelled due to high winds, but conditions improved a day later and it was Shiffrin who laid down a marker with a blistering first run in the Low Tatras mountains.

A time of 58.04 seconds gave Shiffrin an advantage of 1.67secs over home favourite Veronika Velez-Zuzulova, while Petra Vlhova was third-fastest in her homeland.

American Shiffrin was even quicker second time around, going down in 57.56secs to ensure she won by an emphatic margin of 2.36secs, with Wendy Holdener and Velez-Zuzulova second and third respectively.

The 20-year-old will miss out on a fourth successive slalom title, having sat out much of the season after sustaining a medial collateral ligament tear and bone bruising in a training crash last December, but showed she still sets the standards in the discipline.

Hansdotter finished down in 10th, but could celebrate winning her first crystal globe as she leads Velez-Zuzulova by 105 points with just one race remaining in St Moritz on March 19.

Lara Gut was unable to move ahead of Lindsey Vonn, who is out for the season due to a knee injury, in the overall standings after failing to finish the first run.
