Ted Ligety out for rest of the FIS Alpine World Cup season

Two-time Olympic gold medallist Ted Ligety will miss the rest of the FIS Alpine World Cup season after suffering a knee injury in training on Wednesday.

Ligety said in a Facebook post that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a giant slalom run in Oberjoch, Germany.

The United States Ski Team confirmed an injury to Ligety's right knee and medical director Kyle Wilkens said the 31-year-old will return to his homeland for evaluation.

Ligety posted: "We all know ski racing is a dangerous sport but I always thought I could avoid a season ender. Unfortunately today I tore my ACL GS training and am heading home. ‪#‎i'llbeback‬ ‪#‎bummerdude‬ @slalomtokyodrift ‪#‎lamecrash‬ ‪#‎getvideoing‬."

Ligety won gold in the giant slalom at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and at the 2011, 2013 and 2015 World Championships. The Utah native also won Olympic gold in the combined a decade ago.

However, he has endured a disappointing World Cup season and is down in 18th place overall, while only sitting sixth in the giant slalom standings.
