Smith hails Australia bowlers after win over NZ

Australia captain Steve Smith lauded his bowlers after the team's comprehensive win over New Zealand in the first Test.

Nathan Lyon (4-91), Mitchell Marsh (3-73) and Josh Hazlewood (2-75) combined on Monday to see the tourists to victory by an innings and 52 runs in Wellington.

With Peter Siddle battling back spasms, only that trio and Jackson Bird (1-51) bowled on day four.

"He [Siddle] had a bit of spasms in his back. I think he could've bowled today if needed. I tried to put him on the ropes for as long as possible," Smith told Sky Sport NZ.

"I thought all four of the bowlers who bowled today did a terrific job."

Australia's bowlers managed to generate reverse swing on what appeared to be a flat Basin Reserve wicket.

Smith said their ability to find their lines and lengths was crucial as New Zealand were bowled out for 327 in their second innings.

"They did toil hard. We got the ball to go reverse which is always handy," he said.

"The boys got it in good areas again, built a bit of pressure and we were able to hit good areas and take the 20 wickets that we needed to win this match."
