St Helens beat Leeds Rhinos in Super League

Jonny Lomax ended a 12-month injury nightmare with a two-try showing in St Helens' thrilling 38-34 win over Leeds Rhinos, while Warrington Wolves battered Widnes Vikings to return to the top of Super League on Friday.

Saints star Lomax last played a Super League match 12 months ago having undergone a second knee reconstruction, but he was involved at Langtree Park after coming through a reserves match unscathed.

And it took Lomax just five minutes to mark his return with a try, throwing a clever dummy before touching down and Joe Greenwood scored Saints' second to make it 10-0 inside 10 minutes.

It has been a disappointing campaign for defending champions Rhinos, but they had Saints reeling with a fine comeback as tries from Ashton Golding, captain Rob Burrow and James Keinhorst put Leeds 16-10 ahead.

Lomax had his second before the break when he collected Luke Walsh's kick through the defence to make it level by half-time.

The back-and-forth nature of the match continued after the break, Kyle Amor's score and Greenwood's second either side of Ash Handley's try re-established Saints' lead.

Theo Fages' brace then sandwiched Anthony Mullally's try for Leeds, and Keinhorst touched down again in the closing stages to set up a grandstand finish but it was too little, too late for the visitors.

After winning their opening seven matches, Warrington lost three of their past four and put in a dismal showing in an 11-0 defeat at Huddersfield Giants last week.

It was a different story at the Select Security Stadium, though, as Tony Smith's men ran in eight tries in a 48-16 hammering of Widnes.

Kurt Gidley and Kevin Penny touched down inside 10 minutes and Ben Westwood added a brace before Joe Westerman scored the Wolves' fifth before half-time.

Penny had his second in the 56th minute, and Stefan Ratchford scored twice as Warrington proved too good for a Widnes side that have lost five on the spin.
