Stewart, who missed the first eight races of the season due to injury, ended an 84-race winless streak with a superb drive around the Sonoma Raceway in California.

The 45-year-old - who will retire at the end of the season - led for 22 of the 110 laps before being passed by Hamlin with a few corners left to go.

However, Stewart responded with a stunning pass on the final turn after Hamlin went narrowly wide, guiding his Stewart-Haas Racing number 14 to the chequered flag in first place.

"It's special, trust me," Stewart told Fox Sports post-race. "I made mistakes the last two laps... [Hamlin] just told me he was proud of me. He knows what it means."

The win was Stewart's first since 2013 and the 49th of his Sprint Cup series career.

Joey Logano took the final podium place, with Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Jr. rounding out the top five.
