According to Ghana News Agency report, Kusi Addai Kwateng played a trick on the owner, succeeded in getting him to release documents of the stolen vehicle and used them to register it in his name.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence and a Kumasi Circuit Court court, presided over by Mrs. Mary Nsenkyire, granted him GH¢ 80,000.00 bail.

He was ordered to make his next appearance on Tuesday, November 07.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Timothy Amoah narrated to the court that the accused had expressed interest in buying the van and had settled on a price of GH¢ 70,000.00 with the owner, Pastor Richard Opoku.

Reports further indicate that Kusi Addai Kwateng convinced the owner to allow him to take possession of the van as he raised a loan from his bankers to pay him off within days.

Chief Inspector Timothy Amoah said about a month later, the suspect called to inform the complainant that his bankers had asked to see the vehicle documents before granting the loan application. He then pleaded that the suspect made photocopies of the original documents for him to satisfy the bank’s requirement.

The unsuspecting Pastor Opoku did that without hesitation, only to realise later that the accused used the documents to register the vehicle in his own name which he subsequently used as collateral to secure the bank loan.

However, after collecting the loan, he refused to pay for the vehicle. The prosecution said Pastor Richard Opoku was left with no option, but to file a complaint to the police, leading to the arrest of the proprietor.

The police also added that Kwateng in his caution statement admitted the offence.
