Third ODI between England and Sri Lanka abandoned

The weather had the final say in Bristol on Sunday as the third one-day international between England and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain.

England came into the clash holding a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, following a thrilling tie in the opener and a crushing 10-wicket success at Edgbaston on Friday.

The home side looked in a good position to make it 2-0 after restricting the tourists to 248-9 from their 50 overs - what looked to be a below-par score on a good surface.

But just four overs of England's reply were possible as the rain arrived, with play called off at around 5.30pm local time.

Alex Hales had made a scintillating unbeaten 133 in Friday's win, but he was out for a golden duck here as England reached 16-1 before the heavens opened.

Earlier in the piece, half centuries from Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis and captain Angelo Mathews had boosted Sri Lanka's total, with Chris Woakes (3-34) and Liam Plunkett (3-46) impressing with the ball.

The fourth match of the series takes place at The Oval on Wednesday.
