Trevor Bayliss calls for England consistency
Trevor Bayliss warned England are only "at the beginning of a journey" and must be more consistent if they have ambitions of returning to the top of the ICC Test rankings.
Alastair Cook's side beat South Africa, the top-ranked Test team, by 241 runs in the first game of the four-match series at Kingsmead on Wednesday.
England exceeded expectations by regaining the Ashes on home soil this year, but were then beaten 2-0 by Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
Bayliss, who was appointed as Peter Moores' successor in May, stressed that the tourists must not get carried away following their triumph in Durban and expects the Proteas to come out fighting in the rest of the series.
"There is still a lot of improvement in this team. It's only just the beginning of a journey for this young team," he told BBC Sport.
"If you want to be the best team in the world you've got to put in consistently good performances and I think we've got a way to go in that,
"We can by no means rest on one win. We know it's going to be a tough series.
"We've only got to look back at the Ashes. We were up and down in results and that's one of the things we want to work on - consistency over a series."
James Anderson could return when the second Test starts at Newlands on Saturday.
