Twenty20: West Indies close in on India in rankings

West Indies have moved up to second in the ICC Twenty20 International Rankings but remain behind India, while Joe Root has entered the top five batsmen for the first time.

The Windies dramatically overcame England in the World Twenty20 final on Sunday, with Carlos Brathwaite scoring four straight maximums off Ben Stokes in the final over to secure a four-wicket victory in Kolkata.

Subsequently, the Caribbean nation have overtaken New Zealand and moved into second position in the rankings on 125 points, just one behind leaders India, who they beat in the semi-finals.

Having finished as runners-up, England move up to fourth at the expense of South Africa, who slip to fifth.

Joe Root scored 249 runs in six matches at the World T20, including 54 in the final, to propel himself up seven places and into fourth position in the ICC Player Rankings for T20I Batsmen – a career high.

Only Tamim Iqbal (295) and Virat Kohli (273) scored more runs than Root, and the latter – who was also named Player of the Tournament – remains at the top of the rankings.

West Indies' Marlon Samuels, who made 85 not out in the final against England, returns to the top 20 by moving up five places to 18th. He also remains in an unchanged top five of the all-rounders' list.

Samuel Badree maintains his place at number one in the ICC Player Ranking for T20I Bowlers, while India duo Jasprit Bumrah – seventh – and Ashish Nehra – 11th – have achieved career-best positions.
