India's limited-overs captain MS Dhoni joked that Virat Kohli will soon have a stand named after him at the Adelaide Oval following another brilliant display in Tuesday's Twenty20 win over Australia.

Kohli produced a career-best unbeaten 90 as India took a 1-0 lead in the three-game T20 series with a 37-run victory, the Test skipper falling narrowly short of a fourth successive century in Adelaide.

The 27-year-old has been in strong form throughout the tour, notching two hundreds and a pair of half-centuries in the five-match ODI series.

Dhoni praised Kohli for another match-winning performance and playfully suggested he could leave a lasting mark at the venue.

"I think in Adelaide, they will be naming a stand after him," he joked. "By the time he ends his career, quite a few Australian grounds will have his stand.

"He's batting really well. The important thing is, when he's taking the risk of a big shot, he calculates it well. It's easy to play the big shot - everyone can - but it's how you calculate what your strengths are and take risks according to that.

"Also, he looks to score in front of the wicket. Of course, he's a good cutter and puller of the ball, but at the same time he looks to hit in front of the wicket and that always gives you more chances of being successful.

"He is someone who reads the game very well, right from the very start. He's always looking to improve himself as a cricketer and I think that's something which helps you improve."

Dhoni was also pleased to have multiple options in his bowling attack with all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Yuvraj Singh spending time with the ball, while Suresh Raina was not used.

However, the captain says the versatility on offer could make it difficult for batsman Ajinkya Rahane to find a place in the team upon his return from a hand injury.

"We will wait and watch once he gets fit. That will only increase the problem, but it is a good problem to have. All-rounders are important," Dhoni added.

"What I don't want is top five or top six batters, including the keeper, where you don't have a bowling option.

"I think it's important to have players like Yuvraj Singh who can bowl and bat, Suresh Raina, who can bowl and bat. Because if you have too many one-dimensional players in your top order it becomes really difficult when someone has a bad day."
