Wawrinka too good for Ramos-Vinolas

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka outclassed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets to move into the French Open semi-final.

Stan Wawrinka waltzed into his second French Open semi-final with a comfortable 6-2 6-1 7-6 (9-7) victory over the unseeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

The defending champion was the first man into the last four this year after an assured display on Court Suzanne Lenglen with Wawrinka's game just too good for his Spanish opponent.

Breaks of serve were easy to come by for the third seed thanks largely to his accurate, powerful and consistent groundstrokes, while Ramos-Vinolas was guilty of giving up too many cheap points.

Wawrinka duly made him pay as his majestic backhand worked like clockwork, while his touch at the net ensured a flurry of points throughout the near two hours on court.

Ramos-Vinolas' best performance at a grand slam - he had never previously been past round two - threatened to end in a damp squib as Wawrinka strung out three successive games early in the third.

However, the world number 55 battled back to force a tie-break, but Wawrinka upped his game and sealed his progress as Ramos-Vinolas blazed another forehand wide.
