South Sydney Rabbitohs have signed Joe Burgess from Sydney Roosters for the remainder of the 2016 season, ahead of the England wing's return to Super League with Wigan Warriors.

It was announced last week that Burgess would cut short his stay in the NRL to rejoin hometown club Wigan from 2017.

The 21-year-old has featured in just four matches for the Roosters, but will start for the Rabbitohs when they take on Penrith Panthers on Friday.

"Joe is a quality winger and he sees an opportunity to play more first-grade football for the rest of the year with our club," said Bunnies head coach Michael Maguire.

"He has played international football and is an excellent finisher, and we look forward to seeing him turn out in the red and green for the rest of this year."

The Rabbitohs' new signing is no relation to the trio of Burgess brothers he joins at Souths - fellow England internationals Sam, Thomas and George.
