Kwesi Appiah: Psyche local players to feel they are Messi

Kwesi Appiah, former coach of the senior national team of Ghana says local players have the right football mentality

Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has asked for local players to be psyched to boost their mentality in a bid to make them top professionals.

The former captain of the Ghana senior national team was speaking in relation to comments made by Black Stars assistant coach Maxwell Konadu about home-based players lacking the mental fortitude to play for Ghana.

In an interview with Starr FM, Kwesi Appiah said:

“I don’t believe anyone can say that the locally-based players don’t have the mentality. If they don’t become professionals, then how will you get professionals to play for the nation.“When I took over I took some of them to the Cup of Nations if you remember and when we came back they all turned into professionals.

“We need to make them feel big and psyche them to feel that they are like Messi.”

The topic of local players featuring for the Black Stars of Ghana has been an ongoing debate over the years. Black Stars head coach Avram Grant has said he is ready to pick talents who are good enough for the senior national team.

He however disclosed most of these players are found outside the country since the local league almost always sells its best players at the end of the season.
