Cornell played a show with Soundgarden Wednesday at Detroit’s Fox Theater and his death was “sudden and unexpected,” his representative Brian Bumbery said in a statement to the Associated Press

. According to the AP, Detroit police are investigating Cornell’s death as a possible suicide.

Cornell was reportedly found dead on the bathroom floor of his hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit by a family friend after Cornell’s wife Vicky had called and asked him to check on the rocker.

Detroit police spokesman Michael Woody told the AP that he could not release details about why police are investigating Cornell’s death as a possible suicide, but said there were “basic things observed at the scene” that indicated as much.

Woody told Billboard that officers responded to a 911 call at midnight on Thursday. “When the units arrived they were met by a gentleman who indicated that Chris Cornell had been found in his room,” Woody said. “When officers went to the room they found Chris Cornell laying in his bathroom, unresponsive, and he had passed away. We are investigating it as a possible suicide, but we need to wait on the medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death.”

Cornell started trending on Twitter and Facebook early Thursday with fans expressing appreciation for his music.

Cornell was a fixture on the iconic Seattle grunge scene in the ‘90s, and his hits with Soundgarden include “Spoonman,” ”Fell on Black Days,” ”Black Hole Sun,” “My Wave,” and “The Day I Tried to Live.” Cornell also formed Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine. In the early ‘90s, he wrote the cult-classic Temple of the Dog album, which featured members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, and spawned songs such as “Hunger Strike” and “Say Hello 2 Heaven." The latter was, in fact, a tribute to a fellow grunge musician, Andy Wood, who died under similarly tragic circumstances.

Cornell's last tweet showed his excitement for Wednesday night’s show, and didn’t indicate that anything was out of the ordinary.

He also posted the lyrics “I'm the shape of the hole/Inside your heart” on Wednesday.
