Trainee nurses to receive allowances by the end of this week
Some trainee nurses have complained bitterly of not receiving their allowances since September 2017, but that is set to end, according to the Health Ministry.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government restored the allowances of trainee nurses back in September 2017 after was scrapped by the erstwhile Mahama-led administration.

The allowance was subsequently pegged at GH¢400, with President Akufo-Addo affirming that “government will be spending a total of GH¢232,000,000 for this academic year”.

However, four months down the line and some trainees have bitterly complained about government’s failure to duly pay them their allowances.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Trainees Association, Akugri Gadafi, said most trainee nurses have not received any payments since the allowances were restored back in September.
He complained that the Ministry of Health “keep on giving us assurances but it has gotten to a point that we no longer know what to do”.
The cries of the trainees appear to have finally reached the doors of government, with the Health Ministry promising to pay them their allowances by the end of this week.
The Public Relations Officer of the Health Ministry, Robert Cudjoe, has revealed that all trainee nurses can expect to receive their allowances for November and December in the coming days.

According to him, the payment of the allowances has been delayed by challenges with the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).
“We are expecting Controller and Accountant General’s Department to release the November and December allowances but this time around there is this thing called GIFMIS platform which all institutions are supposed to get their releases from.
“Unless the money has been released through the platform, there is no way you can get money to spend so that is a contributory factory. We are hoping that by close of this week, they should see their monies sitting in their accounts,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Trainees Association has threatened to take action if government fails to honor its promise to settle their allowances.

“We are all hoping that before this month of January ends, trainee nurses will receive their monies and when it fails, we as the national executive board will decide the next line of action,” PRO of the Association, Akugri Gadafi stated.
