Extend registration exercise by two weeks- IEA boss

The Electoral Commission has yet again come under major criticism for what many describe as a poorly planned and executed limited voter’s registration exercise.

According to leaders of the two main political parties, the NDC and NPP,  the EC did not anticipate the large numbers that turned out to register and hence did not map out the centres properly.

According to them, many citizens were unable to register as a result, who will be unfairly disenfranchised if the exercise is not extended.

However, the EC  maintains the exercise was near perfect, citing the fact that it had recorded a 92% success rate in the exercise and will therefore not give any additional time for those who could not register to do so.

Meanwhile, The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to extend the limited voters’ registration exercise by at least two more weeks.

In an interview with Accra based radio station, CITI FM, Executive Director of the IEA, Jean Mensa, urged the EC to reconsider the decision.

“ I will say that to some extent it has gone very well and a number of people have been registered. However we followed the process quite carefully and we are also aware that there are many others who would wish to be registered who did not have the opportunity and I know that we have said it will be proper that we do not disenfranchise people who are willing to vote or cast their vote for the first time .”

The Electoral Commission led by Charlotte Osei is yet to announce a decision on the matter.
