5 Ghanaian football stars who got people talking on the Internet in 2017

Pulse Sports looks at five Ghanaian footballers featured prominently on the Internet in 2017.

Between January and now, a lot has happened with regards to Ghanaian players, with bloggers having lots of news to write about these footballers.

Predictably, some of these news have been good, some not so good, and others plain bad. But whichever way you chose to look at it, some Ghanaian footballers always found a way to break the internet.

Both on and off the field some players simply made the Internet a better place for both journalists and readers alike.

Pulse Sports looks at five Ghanaian footballers featured prominently on the internet in 2017.

1. Kevin-Prince Boateng

Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Kevin-Prince Boateng has been a news magnet since switching allegiance from Germany to Ghana.

The 30-year-old has not particularly had the best of years with regards to his football career in 2017, however, his actions both on and off the pitch have generally made news, topical ones at that.

An interview he granted the Daily Mail in February, where he spoke about buying three cars in a day and spending money on girls during his formative years, broke the internet. His constant show of love to his family also gave bloggers something “different” to write about other than the everyday hard news about football.

2. Asamoah Gyan

Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan is one other player who featured prominently on the internet in 2017. Just like Kevin-Prince Boateng, Gyan has not had the perfect 2017 but his works away from football have been just as influential.

The 31-year-old has carved a niche for himself as the most-business minded Ghanaian footballer. Gyan’s variety of businesses have seen him frequently make the headlines and the last 12 months have been very much more the same.

His decision to venture into Airline operation was undoubtedly the biggest of all in 2017, and both fans and journalists simply savored the moment.

3. Thomas Partey

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey has been Ghana’s most consistent player in the last 12 months. In a year where many Ghanaian footballers failed to sparkle on the pitch, Partey was a rare bright spot, winning the hearts of many.

The 24-year-old has also become a fan favourite at both club and international level following his impressive performances.

It is therefore not surprising that many Ghanaians would waste no time in clicking a story that is headlined by Partey’s name. He simply made the internet tick.

4. Richmond Boakye-Yiadom

Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boakye-Yiadom is undoubtedly Ghana’s most prolific player at the moment. In 2017, the striker scored over 40 goals for the Serbian side following his move from Serie B club Latina.

The 24-year-old, though, became an internet sensation after numerous reports linked him to Europeans giants like Arsenal and Chelsea.

Despite there being no real attachment to the speculations, Ghanaian fans of the aforementioned English clubs were always on the lookout for news concerning Yiadom on the internet.

5. Edward Nketiah

Arsenal youngster Edward Nketiah has also been a news magnet in the year 2017. The 18-year-old, who has Ghanaian routes, gained the attention of many Ghanaians after an eye-catching performance for the Gunners in EFL Cup against Norwich.

With Arsene Wenger’s men down by a goal and facing elimination, Nketiah came on as an 85th-minute substitute and scored two quick-fire foals to hand Arsenal victory.

His exploits at youth level also drew along of Ghanaians to him, with the internet sent into a buzz following his performance in that Norwich game. Nketiah is yet to declare whether he will play for Ghana or England at senior level, but he surely made the Internet a better place for journalists and fans in the last 12 months.
