Renovation works begin at the Accra Sports Stadium

The Ministry of Youth and Sports commence rehabilitation works on Accra Sports Stadium

The facility is undergoing maintenance works for the first time since it was used for the 2008 African Cup of Nations held in Ghana.

In recent times, a number of facilities which include the Accra sports Stadium have undergone dilapidation due to levels of neglect.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Isaac Asiamah spoke to the media on the works to be done on the stadium and also revealed the project will cost GH¢12.5 million.

“The stadium has not seen any renovation works for 9 years. In view of the deterioration of the stadium,the Ministry of Youth and Sports engaged the architectural and Engineering services AESL to assess the structural integrity on some selected structures of the stadium which were estimated at GH¢12.5 million. This includes consultancy fee.

Mr Asiamah spoke on the fact that Coupbay Ghana Limited had been contracted to embark on phase one of the stadium’s rehabilitation project.

“Coupbay Ghana Limited have been engaged to undertake phase one rehabilitation of the selected structures of the Accra Sports Stadium. The scope of works contained in the contract include re-roofing of the VIP Lounge, replacement of the damaged steel separators in the orange and VIP stands, coating and painting the structural steel elements with appropriate chemicals and paints and repair of scoreboards."

The stadium is earmarked to be used for the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations to take place in Ghana from 17 November,2018 to 1st December,2018
