How prepared is Kenya to host CHAN 2018?

Kenya's hosting rights in jeopardy as most facilities seem not to be ready for the tournament to be hosted in January 2018.

It is August 2017 with the tournament slated for January 11 to February, 2018. Only one stadium fits to host the tournament as work needs to be done.

The Kasarani Stadium was prepared ahead of the U-18 IAAF Championships which took place from the 12th to the 16th of July, 2017.

This made the stadium fit the requirements of CAF for which include four stadia with specialized lighting systems for live TV coverage, at least four changing rooms, a well mapped out media tribune, referees’ room and an Anti-Doping room.

The other three stadiums which have been earmarked to host face various challenges. In July CAF President Ahmad Ahmad confirmed that Kenya pleaded for the African Football Governing body to give them up to the end of August due to the just ended Kenya Presidential Elections.

Speaking to goal.com just this past week the former Federation of Kenya Football President Sam Nyamweya did pass his displeasure on the possibility of the affairs.

"It will be unfortunate if Chan tournament is taken away from Kenya. I can’t imagine that the resources we spent to put in a bid will go to waste. This is not good news for Kenya at all. I hope something urgent is done and the tournament is staged here."

Mr Sam Nyamweya helped Kenya prepare a bid to host the tournament  and an unanimous source in the current Federation of Kenya Football administration also confirmed to goal.com that Kenyan government were dragging their feet to award contracts and do what is necessary to host the tournament.

Two nations in Morocco and Ethiopia are reported to be on standby in case Kenya fail to meet the deadline. This will not be the first time Kenya have had hosting rights taken away from them.

The 1996 African Cup of Nations had been slated to be hosted in Kenya but earlier this year Issa Hayatou revealed that Kenya did send a letter indicating they were not ready and saw the tournament go to South Africa.

This came with a ban from Kenya participating in the next two African Cup of Nations. Kenya are likely to face similar sanctions as it was confirmed to goal.com that a team of CAF inspectors will be in to deliver the message on September 7th, 2017.
