Liverpool transfer target Alexander Isak has publicly declared that his relationship with Newcastle United is beyond repair, accusing the club of breaking promises over his future.

The 25-year-old striker took to Instagram with a strongly worded statement, saying he had “kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” which allowed “misleading” narratives to circulate. He added:

The reality is that promises were made, and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.

Newcastle United quickly dismissed Isak’s comments, insisting they never promised he could leave this summer. In a firm statement, the club said it wants to keep its top players but would always “listen to their views”.

The Magpies stressed that Isak’s departure is dependent on two key conditions: the club securing a suitable replacement and an interested club matching their £150 million valuation. With less than two weeks left in the transfer window, neither requirement has been met.

Isak’s discontent comes after Liverpool had a £110 million-plus-add-ons bid rejected earlier this month. Sky Sports reported in July that the striker had informed Newcastle of his desire to explore options this summer, but no deal has materialised.

The striker has been training away from the main squad and skipped the PFA Awards ceremony on Tuesday, despite being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25.

He thanked teammates and fans but admitted

With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there.

Newcastle’s reluctance to sell is also tied to their limited attacking options. The club has so far failed in pursuits of Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, while a £25m bid for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa stalled.

At present, the Magpies’ only other recognised striker is 22-year-old William Osula, who did not start a single Premier League game last season.

This situation leaves Newcastle in a precarious position, with Isak’s future unresolved and the transfer window rapidly closing.
